Sept. 23 2017 | NiSantas "Pachanga y Arte" // An Art Show Fundraiser for Mexico & Puerto Rico Community Relief |
Bold letters on posted signs near a glass door entry of an unappealing building welcomed LA art enthusiasts into the dark streets for a night of handmade crafts and spoken word. A night of socializing, and networking to support the awareness of the natural disasters which hit Mexico and Puerto Rico recently.
The night had begun with DJ sets, music blasting Usher throwbacks to classics such as The Delfonics. People glanced at each other as the songs flowed from a genre to another, a nonverbal communication to reassure each other of the enjoyment of each other's company.
A pause followed along with the exchanged stares; an announcement was made of the upcoming spoken word artists to present that night.
"The words that we speak gives the soul to--" rapped Maleek the Freak, a CSULB Fashion Design student.
She took center stage with her partner, The Xicanica, and performed a rap duo to encourage women of color of the untold power they hold in society.
A concurring theme seen throughout the other performances by the guest artists throughout the night--empowering the people.
The idea of liberation presented by the artists unfolded from different perspectives: a dialogue of a breakup consolidation between friends, a rap duo, a positive body poem, and various progressive music lyrics by guest bands.
Puerto Rico and Mexico were not alone in the gathering of the community that night; the breaks between the spoken artists' presentations were used to provide facts and organizations which help the suffrage of the people in Puerto Rico and Mexico.
Including the donations made the night of the art show with the required entry donation, silent bidding, and merchandise purchases.
An evening of empowerment of both the local LA community and guest's individuality.
